Oscha's Puffins design was created in collaboration with tapestry artist Louise Oppenheimer, this gorgeous pattern celebrates the iconic Scottish seabird and brings a little more indigenous fauna into our weaving designs.
Woven in a stunning hybrid colourway, Puffins wonderfully complements our beautiful pattern Riverbank, which was designed in collaboration with Ursula Hunter and showcases some of the endangered animals of the Scottish landscape. We invited Louise to collaborate with us after we visited her studio in the beautiful and ancient surroundings of Kilmartin Glen, Argyll. Having seen her sketchbooks full to the brim with Scottish flora and fauna and the way in which Louise translates her drawings into the woven form. With her richly coloured, hand-woven tapestries, we felt there would be a natural fit between our Oscha textiles and Louise's artistic style.
Taking the iconic form of the puffin as a source of inspiration, Louise produced a design that celebrates the clean lines of this striking little bird and its coastal home environment.
Drawing on her knowledge of evolving fine pen and ink drawings into woven form, Louise worked closely with us to ensure that the sense of movement and character of her initial sketches were transformed into the final textile design.
I like to draw simple lines celebrating my sense of place in the landscape and consider how I may translate them into my weaving. Preferring to concentrate on only the most essential marks, I use a pen rather than a pencil to focus the mind and produce imagery which aims to capture the essence of the beautiful place I call home. Whether it be an abstract interpretation of natural forms, or a pictorial representation of the trees, hills, and coastline of my surroundings, the west coast of Scotland in all its variety is my constant source of inspiration.

The puffins began life in a small sketchbook before the final design emerged and prints of the initial line drawing can be ordered from Louise's studio and gallery where visitors are welcome to view work in progress as well as finished pieces both framed and unframed.
