Key Safety Checks for baby slings
Supported Back
Make sure baby's back is supported so that they cannot slump down. There should be at least 2 fingers width between their chin and their chest. This means your sling should be tightened snuggly across baby's back.
Visible
You should be able to see your baby's face at all times. Their nose and mouth should never be covered with fabric or pressed into your body. They should be carried in a "close enough to kiss" position, with their head resting on the hard part of your chest. Their airways must always be clear.
Securely Held
Your baby should be fully supported by the sling. Make sure you have tightened the sling, and everything is secure. If you are bending, bend at your knees, do not lean forward and keep a hand on your baby's head.
Ergonomic Position
It is preferable to have your baby positioned so that their hips are at the same height or slightly lower than their knees, this forms an M position and is optimal for hip development.
Breastfeeding in a sling
A baby sling or carrier is merely an aid when breastfeeding; you must always use one hand to support baby’s head. Never use the sling fabric to support your baby’s head; they must be able to latch off and on freely.
Constantly monitor your baby when breastfeeding. Ensure baby always has good airflow, their back is supported so they are not slumped, and their chin is not pressed against their chest. Be aware of trip hazards when loosening a woven wrap.
When you finish nursing, immediately return your baby to the normal upright carrying position and re-tighten the sling to be hands-free again.
